University of Utah
Hatch Center (DC)
Dubbed the “Embassy of Utah,” the Hatch Center involved the renovation, restoration, and connection of two historic townhomes in D.C.’s Dupont Circle to house the University of Utah’s internship program. The facility includes student housing, lounges, a welcome center, office space, and a rooftop lounge. A key design goal was integrating the university’s signature red within the historic context—achieved through custom carpet on the prominent curved stair, a preserved architectural highlight.

Original fireplaces with stone and carved wood mantels were carefully retained, supporting both preservation and sustainability goals. Modern yet period-appropriate finishes balance historic character with contemporary comfort, creating a welcoming, functional space for students, staff, and visitors.
